BEHIND THE UNDERWATER LENS
Mitxel González
Underwater photography is a highly demanding technical and artistic discipline. Capturing images beneath the surface requires mastering the loss of contrast caused by the water column, refraction, and unpredictable light dispersion, alongside the challenge of approaching marine life while respecting its organic behavior. Every frame demands precise management of artificial lighting and constant adaptation. However, for me, the true challenge does not lie in the complexity of the medium, but in articulating a powerful visual narrative where silence seems to rule. My purpose is to translate the behavior of underwater light into a visual language that speaks to the viewer's sensitivity. I aim for my creativity to manifest through composition and the deliberate treatment of chiaroscuro in the big blue.
Whether isolating the abstract textures and geometric patterns of a macro subject in tropical reefs, or shaping the dense and moody atmosphere of my native Cantabrian coast, I strive for each shot to invite a thoughtful visual reading, inviting the viewer to pause. This aesthetic vision, which has earned international recognition from leading diving brands and specialized global publications, is deeply intertwined with my commitment to marine conservation. I believe that fine-art photography has the power to transform distance into empathy. By revealing the fragility of the ecosystem through truthful editing, completely free of artificial distortions, I aim to appeal to the discernment of a viewer who demands authenticity. In every single shot, technique is subordinate to nature, reminding us that the planet's most powerful stories lie waiting just beneath the surface.
